AIDS Unfiled

Today TaxMama hears from Tom in Los Angeles, who tells us, “I am a person living with AIDS. I have not paid my taxes in years, partly because my medical costs are insane, and partly because I thought I would be dead by now. Having survived my friends, it’s time to move forward with my life and clear this matter up. Good thing I spent pretty much every dime keeping myself alive and fed. What do I do now?”

Dear Tom.

Yup, this is one of those good news/bad news stories.

The good news is – You’re going to live.
The bad news is – when you see your tax debt, you’ll wish you were dead!

Well, if your finances were really as simple as you say, why don’t you try something really bold? Do your own tax returns for each of those years! It’s easier than you think.

You’ll find IRS forms here for the last 17 years.

And California Forms here

Start with the most current years and work your way backwards for 6 years.

See how much you end up owing, once you’ve done that. If it’s not much, then take your tax returns down to the IRS and see if they will accept these 6 years to fully catch you up. It’s likely that they will.

You have IRS offices at the Los Angeles Federal Building – 300 N. Los Angeles Street and at the Van Nuys Federal Building at Van Nuys Blvd and Delano.

Start with IRS and settle with them.

But don’t forget tot work it out with California, too, when you’re done with IRS. California’s local Franchise Tax Board office is at 300 S. Spring Street, Suite 5704, Los Angeles, CA 90013-1204

Bring proof of your medical condition. I think IRS will help you sort this out. Once they’ve done that, the FTB is more likely to help you, too.

And remember, you’ll find answers to lots of information about medical reasons for not filing and other tax information, free. Where? At TaxMama.com
