Ask Taxmama Issue 426 – Repent, Harlequin

Dear Family,

Looking for a heading for this week’s issue, since

tonight is Yom Kippur, naturally the word ‘repent’
comes to mind. But if you’ve ever read Harlan
Ellison’s Hugo-award-winning story, you can’t think
of the word ‘repent’ without also following that word

with ‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman.
(Ooooh…I just learned that you can buy a signed
edition through Amazon. )

Back to Yom Kippur – from Friday before sunset to
Saturday after sunset, you will find your observant
Jewish friends fasting and praying throughout most of
day. When Jews fast, it’s really a fast. No food. No

water. Strict obervers don’t even brush teeth or
shower. (Not a good day to get near some people…)

Traditionally, in Los Angeles, since we can’t drink,
Yom Kippur generally turns out to be one of the

hottest days of the year. This year, for the first
time that I can ever remember – there may be rain.
And folks walk to synagogues. Don’t look up with your
mouth open….

On to more serious things, like this week’s TaxQuips.

Yesterday I was wrong. Yes, I admit it. Two Tax Pros
caught me out. Read their comments. You’ll find a
summary of the last two weeks TaxQuips below, with
links to each.

This week’s Money Funnies offering will make you

appreciate your job just a little more. Read below
to re-orient your perspective.

IRS News this week contains information about a
new resource that IRS launched for those who’ve

lost their homes, faced foreclosure and worse.
You’ll also find a reminder of the upcoming
IRS audits – they’re coming next month. And they
affect your 2006 tax return – even if you haven’t

filed it yet. Read below for more details.

Our Job Advice of the Week is about your flowery,
effusive, eloquent, skillful and adept use of
words. Read Alesia Benedict’s resume advice below.

OK, you’ve got a lot to read, to learn, and to
enjoy. And keep an eye on the TaxQuips site this
week. I’ll be adding lots of articles as I write up
my notes from last week’s IRS meeting. There are

some interesting things coming your way.

Oh, one last thing. Very important.
On NBC, Martha Stewart is helping plan a couple’s wedding.
You’re invited to vote on their wedding cake.

Please, drop by an vote for Wendy Kromer’s cake – it’s the green one.
Trust me. It’s fabulous. I got to eat a slice at her cousin’s
wedding in New Orleans last year.

Time to get to work!

Have an untaxing, fun week!

Hugs from your favorite TaxNerd,

Eva Rosenberg, EA

But do put everyone’s picture – so even if you don’t know the local language, you can point to a family member and ask if anyone has seen him or her. Or use a graphic or piece of art you all like. You’ll find three options right here in our SPECIAL DEALS section.
