Dear Family,
Looking for a heading for this week’s issue, since
tonight is Yom Kippur, naturally the word ‘repent’
comes to mind. But if you’ve ever read Harlan
Ellison’s Hugo-award-winning story, you can’t think
of the word ‘repent’ without also following that word
with ‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman.
(Ooooh…I just learned that you can buy a signed
edition through Amazon. )
Back to Yom Kippur – from Friday before sunset to
Saturday after sunset, you will find your observant
Jewish friends fasting and praying throughout most of
day. When Jews fast, it’s really a fast. No food. No
water. Strict obervers don’t even brush teeth or
shower. (Not a good day to get near some people…)
Traditionally, in Los Angeles, since we can’t drink,
Yom Kippur generally turns out to be one of the
hottest days of the year. This year, for the first
time that I can ever remember – there may be rain.
And folks walk to synagogues. Don’t look up with your
mouth open….
