Ask TaxMama Issue 614 – Sky s the Limit

Dear Family,

While I was working on today’s newsletter, a stunning bit of news crossed my desk. Rob Nance, who founded AccountingWeb.com is exiting. The CEO of Sift Media, his parent company, said some wonderful things about Rob’s accomplishments. But, that won’t make up for Rob’s not being there. At least not for me. Rob Nance has been a mentor and friend to a great many of us nerdy accountants and tax pros. He has pushed us to write and teach – and encouraged us when we were discouraged. Yes, sometimes that even happens to TaxMamas. Rob doesn’t even know the impact he has had on the many people whose live he’s touched.

When things wind down, Rob will inevitably be looking for work again. Whoever ends up hiring him will be very fortunate. I am looking forward to see what new adventures he has. Especially since he always includes all of us. Thanks ROB!

Speaking of inspiration, today is the anniversary of the 50s TV series Sky King. That was the first time I saw a girl (quite a bit older than me at the time, but still a girl) doing things guys do. Seeing a girl like Penny meant a lot. She was actively working on the ranch – and flying an airplane. (In the 50s???) Being the only girl in a family of boys, naturally, I emulated the boys and expected to be permitted to do all the things they did. It always took me aback, in each instance that I came up against limits on what girls were permitted to do – when it was clear we were perfectly able to do the same things. Sometimes, even better. (grin)

You probably don’t even know what I am talking about today.  This country has come so far beyond that mindset, due to the battles fought by some powerful (and perhaps unpopular, or controversial) women. My childhood was shaped by those prejudices. I am so glad your life is not.

In IRS News today, IRS has extended the time to file returns and reports for the estates of people who died in 2010. David and Mary Mellem explains the generous provisions related to employee cell phone usage

In today’s Money Funnies & Inspiration, we learn how to economize on nursing home costs – and to even make the experience much more fun!
