How much money is taken out of my check due to taxes?”

Dear Tia,

It’s great to have a job at this age – and some money of your own. But it doesn’t feel like much, after you see all the taxes they take out, does it?

OK, let’s see. Here are the things that are deducted for sure:

Social Security and Medicare – 7.65%

Frankly, I don’t see any other mandatory withholding in Michigan. Some states have state disability insurance deducted. But I can’t find that in Michigan.

Now, the other two things that might be deducted from your paycheck are:

Federal Income Tax and State Income Tax

You control how much of that is deducted by the number of exemptions you enter on the Form W-4 you fill out for your employer. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf

See if you can figure out what number to enter, using IRS’s withholding calculator

If you can’t, ask your parents for help.

And remember, you can find answers to all kinds of questions about payroll withholding and other tax issues, free.
