Hi Marylu

Simple, just look up your filing status and exemption amount in the IRS payroll tables in Publication 15-A
https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15a/ar02.html#d0e2475 . That’s the short answer….

Of course, to explain how the tables work requires a longer explanation.

First, IRS’s tables cover the two filing statuses that are listed on your W-4 – single or married. There is no head of household for these withholding tables.

Then, once you know your filing, status, you need to know how often you get paid.

IRS’s tables cover the following pay periods:

Weekly,
Bi-Weekly (every two weeks)
Semi-monthly (twice a month, like the first and 15th)
Monthly
Daily

Knowing the first two pieces of information, find the chart for the correct pay period and the correct filing status.

The left hand side of the chart shows your gross earnings for that pay period (gross is before they take taxes out).

Once you’ve found your gross earnings, look along the chart to the right and you’ll see the columns are broken down by the number of exemptions you’ve claimed. They list up to 10 exemptions.

If your gross earnings are higher than the amounts shown in the tables, you’ll need to go to IRS’s Wage Bracket Tables. https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15a/ar02.html#d0e2292

Those are more complicated to use.

On the other hand….you could just use a tool like TurboTax’s Paycheck Withholding Calculator
