Network Marketing and Unemployment

Today TaxMama hears from Paul in New York in the TaxQuips Forum, with an interesting question. “I joined a network marketing company couple year ago. When my downlines bought merchandise I would receive commissions. Two months ago I got lay-off from my regular job. And I filed for unemployment benefit from NYS Unemployment Office. Do I have to report to the NYS Unemployment Office if I receive the commission check?”

You’re a lucky man, Paul.

Kris Hix, an Enrolled Agent in Kentucky did some digging for you. Kris says,

In KY, OH, and IN- anytime you earn income you are to notify the unemployment office, so your benefits would be reduced by the amount.

I know that you don’t live here, so I got online at the unemployment site for NY state.  Guess what?  same.  Yes, you have to let the unemployment office know.

And remember, you can find answers to all kinds of questions about being on unemployment and other tax issues, free. Where? Where else? At www.TaxMama.com.
