Today TaxMama hears from Mike in NY, whose friend has been putting the wrong address on his tax return for years. Of course, as a result, his refund has been going to the wrong address. How can he get his missing refunds back for 2006-2009?
Dear Family,
Ian Germaine has this suggestion for the NYS refund – As long as you filed you return the money that was due should still be there. Look up the State Treasury’s # and call. If they claim it was paid, ask for copies of checks front and back, in a non confronting way. Also look in the State Comptroller posting of found money on the older years. Most states post this in a newspaper once a year but it is available on their web site also.
As to the IRS refund, if the check has not been cashed, you may be on IRS’s Unclaimed Refund list. Just call and ask – 800-829-1040.
If it has been cashed, IRS has a form for this – Form 3911 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f3911.pdf
Answer the questions on that form and IRS will start a trace for you. As Ian said for NY, IRS will track down a copy of the check, if it was cashed, looking for the endorsement on the back.
Since we know the address the check was sent to, if the people residing there have been cashing his checks, they won’t be hard to find. That’s forgery, folks!
Hmmm…I guess there are times when direct deposit works better than a refund check in the mail.
And remember, you can find answers to all kinds of questions about missing refunds and other tax issues, free. Where? Where else? At www.TaxMama.com.
