Follow Instructions

Today TaxMama® hears from Michele in the TaxQuips Forum who makes extra work for herself. “I had to jump over high hurdles on a single bound, tall buildings with a single leap, etc. but still unable to find/get the “Crazy Cat Lady” case referred in the Tuesday, June 6, 2012 email, when you answered a case about a man and his horse with horse-related expenses. If you make it easy, “they will come.”

Ask TaxMama

 Dear Michele,

I don’t know why it was so hard for you to find the information. First of all Rita Lewis, EA of https://DollarsSense.com in CT, found it easily by simply Googling Crazy Cat Lady.

But even that was unnecessary. All you had to do was follow the link in that day’s TaxQuip the an article about it which is posted on the TaxMama site. That article contained a link to case – a 42-page opinion in Van Dusen v. Commissioner. I couldn’t have made it any easier than that.

The important point is, I go out of my way to add resources and information to my TaxQuips and to articles posted on the site (even when the articles didn’t originally include the reference information). All you need to do is to read them – and follow the bouncing link.

A friend of mine once manufactured a nifty computer device which got rave reviews from all the major computer magazines. It was really easy to install – just strap it over the keyboard. Customer service got lots of calls with questions about how to install it. Chris came to the conclusion that no one ever read the simple, 3-line instructions (in plain English). He died without ever finding a solution to the RTI problem.  (RTI = Read The Instructions.) Gee, I hope that doesn’t happen to me!

And remember, you can find answers to all kinds of questions about following instructions and other tax issues, free. Where? Where else? At www.TaxMama.com.
