Education Commuting

Today TaxMama hears from Shawn in Indiana who tells us, “My wife is a full time college student. She commutes to school. It is about 80 miles round trip.

Can we deduct the mileage on her car as an education expense?

Dear Shawn,

That’s quite a drive.

Hopefully, she doesn’t have intense traffic and can enjoy the ride.

Or perhaps she listens to books on tape, or her favorite music?

Because she’s certainly not getting a tax deduction.

Commuting costs are never deductible, whether for education, or jobs, or business. Sorry.
