Ask TaxMama Issue 657 – Sweet Safe New Year

Dear Family,

Whew…OK, I am all caught up, at the moment, on answering all questions in the TaxQuips Forum, from students, from clients and everyone. We have finished all tax returns – except the one person who is THE annual straggler.

So perhaps it’s time to focus on family and friends and the New Year holiday starting this weekend. This season is meant to be a time of reflection over the past year; of supping on honey and apples – to symbolize a sweet and prosperous year to come; and to pray that we are written into the Book of Life for another year. These days, that prayer seems to be working as ever more people around us are living well past 90, in somewhat good health.

[Note: We will be dark next Monday and Tuesday for the High Holidays.]

Speaking of which, this week’s Money Funnies reaches out to Heaven – and gives us democracy at work…in a bizarre and funny way.

So, to you my friends, I wish a Shana Tova V’Metukah and Gmar Chatima Tova!  Happy 5773.

[Note: I’d love to hear about your culture and traditions, too. Really! Send a note to TaxMama@TaxMama.com with “My Culture” in the subject line]

We all love contests – especially when our chance to win depends on skill, not just luck. This week, Equifax launches their Family Money Matters Video Contest! One grand prize winner will receive a $1,000 Discover gift card, and all finalists will receive a complimentary full-year subscription to Equifax Complete™ Family Plan, a credit monitoring and identity theft protection product for the entire family. (Considering all the identity theft going on, this can be a serious valuable prize.)

Next week’s MarketWatch column will talk about the human side of identity theft – how real people are affected. And BOY are they affected! I just got off the phone with someone who has a doozey of a story. I know that in yesterday’s TaxQuips email, I thanked you for your stories. I thank you even more. The stories you’ve told me will help other people facing the same problems and challenges.

You’ll also be getting a bonus story in MarketWatch next week (or the week after) about whistleblowers and how lucrative that can be. (After all, Bradley Birkenfeld was awarded a whopping $104 million from IRS!) Stay tuned.

Incidentally, MarketWatch has a video interview with Google’s Sergey Brin, who is introducing the new Google Glass. Have you seen it? (Ooooooh, they are working on a self-driving car, too.) This device is a headset computer, camera, phone and lots of other devices all rolled into one. I’ve been reading about this kind of concept in S-F books for decades. The future is really here!

Today, in IRS News , we learn that on September 26th, The IRS will be holding a Spanish language webinar about Business Taxes for the Self-Employed. (And I won’t tell you about the IRS announcement that JUST came over the wires – that they are shutting down the whole electronic filing system from October 6 – 9, just a week before the final filing deadline…nah. You don’t want to know that, do you?)

This week’s Equifax Blog covers Tax Issues to Resolve During Your Divorce . Dedicated to some special friends. Ilyce Glink talks about 7 bad Credit Card Habits for us to avoid.

If you want to see all the TaxQuips from earlier in the week, drop by here. There are some interesting topics.

We have an RTRP class coming up at CPE Link next month – after tax season ends. I am getting happy emails from people who have passed the exam! If you haven’t scheduled your exam date yet, in this week’s AccountingWeb.com blog, I explain why you may want to reserve that date now!

TaxMama’s EA Exam Review Course is on hiatus for the High Holidays and the end of the Business and Entity tax filing season. We will be starting Part 3 on October 2nd. Meanwhile, each weekend will be devoted to the Part 2, intense, Final Review sessions. And yes, people are passing the EA Exam. I am hearing from jubilant students who just can’t believe they’ve done it! You still have time to Join the fun! (With a Fall Special discount, no less!)
