Ask TaxMama Issue 654 – Still Summer

Dear Family,

Friday is a nice, gray day here in the Valley. The sun is not burning brightly down upon our heads and shoulders – at least, not yet. Thank goodness. It’s been tough out there – and my car’s A/C unit seems to have a leak. It only blows cool air when Rick recharges it. By the time I use it two days later…the coolant is gone. It’s suffocatingly hot – even with the windows open. (Don’t worry, we’re not experiencing global warming. It’s just cyclical. The cycles only last a little while – and eon or so.)

This intense heat affects seniors, and those who are frail, a great deal more than young, healthy people. Sethu Subramanian posted some guidance to help us prevent strokes in this weather. Speaking of seniors and those in need of physical therapy, we have an appeal for help from Chris Reed. It seems that in these time of health-care flux, the State of California’s Legislature is monkeying with the way seniors receive physical therapy – perhaps making it impossible for them to work with the therapists they know and trust. They are messing with your Medicare and tax dollars! Please read Chris’s appeal. And if you’re in California – take action. This could affect you, or someone you love.

Moving on to Mom. This week’s Money Funnies will make you laugh or cry…or groan, depending on your perspective. As three grown sons help out Mom.

Today, in IRS News we get some tips from the IRS about deducting our charitable contributions. (Did you ever read what happened to the Cat Lady’s contribution deductions?). The IRS also explains about the notices we’re apt to get from the IRS now and then. For even more detail about these notices and in-depth tips, read TaxMama’s ® Equifax blog.

This week’s It’s A WAHM thing column was inspired by recent reports from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration’s (TIGTA) office about all the fraud in the tax system, and by a TaxQuips post about a young Chinese girl who met a really bad tax pro.

This week’s Equifax Blog also spends some time on those who are self-employed…Working Like an Employee While Being Paid Like a Freelancer

If you want to see all the TaxQuips from earlier in the week, drop by here. There are some interesting topics.

Incidentally, if you’re looking for a job, an intern, or a new employee, please visit the new TaxMama Career center, partnered with JobTarget.com. For 15% off on any postings or orders, use the code: taxcareers

CPE Link just got approved for the California CTEC program. So my upcoming classes will qualify for CTEC credit, in addition to EA, CPA, RTRP credits. Next week’s class is the 8-hour RTRP review course.

If you haven’t scheduled your exam date yet, in this week’s AccountingWeb.com blog, I explain why you may want to reserve that date now!
