Ask TaxMama Issue 536 – Celebrations and Disasters

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr Weekend

Dear Family,

Happy 60th Birthday to Stevie G!

January 15th already. My how time flies. Today, your 4th estimated tax payment is due for 2009. You may need to make a payment you didn’t realize you owed. If you received the benefit of the Making the Work Pay Credit, please check to make sure you have not been under-withheld. https://www.marketwatch.com/taxes

Hooray! Well how do you like that? The new Form 5405 is finally up. You can finally file for your credits. Read all about it, including some sound strategy in today’s IRS News.

Even MORE important. You will also find information on how to make deductible donations to Haitian Earthquake Relief providers. The people in Haiti experienced unprecedented destruction. What’s worse, getting help to them is impeded due to the extent of the disaster – and a government that was never strong enough to build a solid infrastructure. Relief workers, supplies, equipment to provide potable water, medical personnel and more are on the scene and can’t be brought to the victims in a timely manner. Pray for these people – and, as always, be generous. But be careful. Don’t make donations to phony organizations. Do read the information in today’s IRS News.

This is also a long weekend for organizations that observe Federal holidays. Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Those of us who grew up during his lifetime know what a different world it used to be. Freedoms and privileges you take for granted were fought for – peacefully – by a great man and the people he inspired. If you are a person of color and can sit on any bus seat, walk into any restaurant or bathroom, or hotel, through the front door, and get treated with dignity – please, take a moment to thank Reverend King. If you can get a job anywhere, based on your skills, rather than your skin – pause and say thanks. I remember. Do you? The world is a very different place because of this stubborn, kind, peaceful man.
