Dear Family,

It’s been an exhilarating week, with students passing Part I of the EA Exam all over the place! Sad, though, two folks missed by just a tiny margin – 2 points and 5 points. Heartbreaking. So we had an extra workshop last night just to quiz up certain topics that seem to need reinforcing. That was actually fun.

Of course, it would have been easier if I hadn’t been having odd technical problems hearing and being heard. After testing the headset (and a new headset) on three different computers in the office, it’s pretty clear that the culprit must be the sound (or media) card on my Internet computer. (Yes, I have separate computers for my client files, and for other projects that require more security than being on the Internet, surfing all day provides.) So, my guru husband will have to make some fixes for me.

But, it really does get scary when you have dozens of people sitting in a classroom, waiting for you to start; you have a lesson all loaded and ready to go – and there seems to be no way to communicate. Thank goodness I am redundancy freak. While it takes a little extra time, I can switch to any of 4-6 computers and get the class going again. Sheesh, you should see my living room. Definitely does not feel like an office in ‘home’ – just an office. (Ohhhhh, I miss my fireplace, and roasting marshmallows in it.)

Aside from the fact that I am totally fascinated with my own foibles, why do I bring this up? To ask you – what are you going to do if your tools break down at a crucial moment? Do you have redundancy? Do you have a back-up plan? What are your most important tools, especially those you rely on, like air and water? What have to done to arrange for a quick back-up or replacement in an emergency? Start thinking about it and doing some planning now. People will often bear with you for a half hour or so, while you re-group. But you shouldn’t be forced to cancel some presentation, class, event, etc. just because your tools fail. Make plans – NOW!
