Ask TaxMama Issue 508 – Terrific New Resources

Happy National Rose Month

Remember – Quarter 2 Estimated Tax Payments are due on June 15th

Dear Family,

This was an odd week for technology. It started Sunday, when a really terrifc tool that Intuit was beta-testing was suddenly shut down with no e-mail notices to the beta-testers that it was going down. Poof, suddenly all the data we’d uploaded to their secure server was gone – inaccessible. Undaunted, TaxMama spent her one leisure day, Sunday, researching alternatives – and found something even better. You’re going to love this! Take a look at . It’s a free service – also in beta mode.

You can share workspaces for personal or business projects, with any number of people you designate. You get a website with it, if you need one. And this website has one of the very set of design tools I’ve seen for folks who don’t know how to code HTML – and don’t want to learn. It comes with a free domain name, too. If you’re smart, you won’t use that service. Pay $10 or so for your own domain name at or . You won’t have to struggle to get control of your domain if you leave the service.

Another no-cost service I came across, but haven’t really investigated or tried out…for folks who are looking for an online bookkeeping system that you can share with your accountant, take a look at this. As they say, there is no charge now, and they plan to keep it that way. But they will add optional, paid services. That’s how they plan to make money in the long run. If you try it, let me know what you think.

Yet one more complimentary service that will blow your socks off. (Do you even wear socks anymore?) As the Microsoft Office Suite and similar products get more and more expensive, it’s really refreshing to find something very similar (even better in some ways) that will do all the same things – and let you read just about any document or spreadsheet or powerpoint-type file – and save or export your output into a choice of many configurations. Since I still have Office 2000, I can’t open docx files in Word. But I can in Open Office! And this is the only tool I’ve found that will create PDF files where the text links work (not just the HTML-looking links) – without having to buy an expensive professional version of Adobe.

In IRS News this week, we learn about the worst case scenario when dealing with payroll services or leasing employees. Read it – it’s important.

I call today’s Money Funny – you will learn the difference between Heaven and Hell – and what’s important in life.

In TaxQuips this week, we learn how to handle deductions and expenses when your car is used for advertising, how not to commit tax fraud when it comes to the personal residence exclusion, what IRS is apt to do if you owe them money, and about IRS tax amnesty.

As always, we love your feedback, opinions and ideas.

You are what makes all this fun – and interesting!
