Ask TaxMama Issue 494 – IRS Dumps Outside Collectors

Happy National Chocolate Chip Cookie Week

Dear Family,

Is it cold where you are? Here in Southern California at about 5:00 am it must be around 55 degrees in my living room – and I’m all scrunched up trying to stay warm. I’ll bet it’s colder where you live, isn’t it? They tell me some places actually have snow, or below 0 weather. Can you imagine? Then, downloading my mail, there’s a sale notice from Queensboro. They have warm, fluffy sweatshirts on sale for $9.95 – with your logo or design embroidered on them. (They don’t charge you for the design set-up). Ohhh…I could use one of those right now. (Meanwhile, perhaps if I turn the heat on, or put on a robe,…or….does hypothermia make your brain stop working or slow down?)

Making progress on the Positive Idea site. Tell me what you think of the new design. There are still some features we want to make sure will work, and to remove the extra junk on the left side of the page, so the site fits in your monitor’s window properly. The calendar will show deadlines to apply for various grants and programs that might help you. Feel free to post your comments and suggestions. They’ll go to Andrew and he’ll pretty them up with graphics. He’s having such a good time with all that. For instance.

Speaking of great ideas, Barbara Weltman’s Idea of the Day e-mails are terrific. Today’s tip is about Make a Referral Week – March 9-12. The goal is to end up generating 1,000 referred leads to 1,000 deserving businesses. You don’t have to be in business to recommend your favorite businesses to friends. Remember, service businesses like hairdressers, dry cleaners, etc. are really hurting.

Thanks to those of you who responded about IRS’s meeting at the Fresno service center last week. As soon as the date is set for the meeting and the tour, I’ll let you know.

About the new California homebuyers credit worth $10,000. I overlooked one MAJOR feature. (don’t know how I didn’t notice that. seems I knew it when the law was passed and forgot it. Must be the cold. It was probably about 70 degrees or so all this week.) Anyway, the credit is only for NEW home purchases. That means, never lived in before. You have to certify that no one ever lived in the house to get the credit.

Today’s IRS News reminds you to file your 2005 tax return IMMEDIATELY, if you haven’t yet. Otherwise, you will lose the right to collect any refund coming to you. You’ll be able to see the number of people in each state who have’t filed – and the dollars due to them. The Internal Revenue Service is encouraging business taxpayers, associations and other interested parties to submit to the Industry Issue Resolution (IIR) Program tax issues for resolution involving a controversy, a dispute or an unnecessary burden on business taxpayers. And some great news! IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman announced yesterday that they are dumping the outside collections services.

In our Job Advice on the Week, you’ll learn how to Clean Up Your Web Trail. If you’ve been following the news about folks who didn’t get hired because their prospective employer Googled them…or employees got fired because of inappropriate information their employers found online…you’ll understand why it’s important to clean up your public image. Seriously, think before you post something to the Web. If you want to post outrageous pictures or statements, set your personal notes/online diary/blog to private, so only your close friends can see it
