Ask TaxMama Issue 468 – Customs for Travelers

1789 US Customs begins enforcing Tariff Act

Dear Family,

Happy August!

Did you know that today is the anniversary of when the U.S. Customs Department began enforcing tariffs? That was in 1789 – nearly 220 years ago! Since they are still going strong today, just click on the graphic at the top of this issue to find a link to current tips for travelers.

This morning brought me two interesting things to read or play with. The first was the BottomLine Secrets newsletter with a fascinating article about your dreams and how to interpret them. They always have something that makes me stop and read. https://bottomlinepersonal.com/

The second thing was a link to site that shows you what a website looks like to color-blind person. If you have about a half or hour to get totally distracted, try it. It will make you re-think your website – and/or understand someone else’s point of view (pun intended).

Oh and, aw shucks, a flattering thing arrived in my e-mail, too.

IRS News provides an overview of the Housing Bill courtesy of Spidell Publishing Inc. The resource box will also provide a link to this week’s TaxWatch article about the hidden traps in the bill.

The article was the number 1 e-mailed article on MarketWatch for 2 full days – and number 1 read article for about a day and a half. It was also featured on Yahoo!Finance, MSN and several other places. Naturally, my e-mail is swamped with questions. Many of them relate to change in the way vacation homes and rentals will be treated if you try to move in and convert them to your personal residence. I apologize if I can’t provide a personal answer to each of you. But, I am taking some of your questions to some the top experts in the field next week. Please look for the answers in my TaxWatch column in the next 7-10 days.

For those who’ve signed up for a no-cost membership in TheLadders, they had an excellent article this week about why and how to negotiate a severance package at the time of your hiring. It’s provides excellent tips on how to finesse that package. That one article alone is worth signing up for TheLadders.

Today’s Money Funnies is about a newlywed wife with great planning skills.

TaxQuips this week got into quite a discussion about the deductibility of dependents of divorced parents. That is always such combative area of the law – even after simplification. We also learned how to write off software, be considered a real estate professional and how grandma can minimize her taxes for providing daycare for her grandchild.

Zazzle – Cafe Press – Queensboro

Since it’s summer, and you’re probably going to be traveling with your family, consider getting matching T-shirts and/or hats.
