Dear Family,

This weekend the town of Gilroy in California celebrates Garlic. Aside from the usual foods you associate with garlic, you’ll find all kinds of surprises, like ice cream, deserts, chocolates and who knows what else they dream up. Now THIS is a way to spend a weekend!

In the news this week is House Bill 3221, The Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008

President Bush will most likely be signing this into law.
It will include provisions to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
One of the things that intrigues me about all these government bailouts – what is the lesson we’re learning here?

If you’re going to rip off the system, don’t do it in nickels and dimes. Do it BIG TIME. If you make a really, really huge mess – you get to keep the rewards and the US Government will pick up your tab.
Be sure to teach this to your children so they can care for you properly in your old age when the government goes bust.

And speaking of becoming famous…or notorious, this week’s Job Advice is about getting your 15 minutes of fame. And why it’s important.

For those who’ve signed up for a no-cost membership in TheLadders, they had an excellent article this week about why and how to negotiate a severance package at the time of your hiring. It’s provides excellent tips on how to finesse that package. That one article alone is worth signing up for TheLadders.

Today’s Money Funnies is about girls night out – and what it can cost you. You’ll be chirping with laughter.

TaxQuips this week ended up with an interesting discussion about how late you can fund SEP-IRAs – and if you can fund them long after the tax return has been filed? We also discussed capital gains rates, employee business expenses and dealing with excess lease mileage

IRS News contains links to new and old IRS resources for folks in different businesses – and those concerned about your IRAs and retirement plans. IRS even has new videos for you.

And remember, when you buy any TaxNerd item, TaxMama will donate all the profits to the Central Asia Institute, where they are building schools for girls in Asia. The best way to achieve peace to earn the love and trust of people around the world by helping them improve their own lives.

Hugs from your favorite TaxNerd,

Summer Family Identity – 3 Choices:

Zazzle – Cafe Press – Queensboro

Since it’s summer, and you’re probably going to be traveling with your family, consider getting matching T-shirts and/or hats.

(DO NOT PUT ANYONE’S NAME ON THEM – you’re just asking strangers to kidnap your children!)

But do put everyone’s picture – so even if you don’t know the local language, you can point to a family member and ask if anyone has seen him or her. Or use a graphic or piece of art you all like. You’ll find three options right here in our SPECIAL DEALS section.
