Ask TaxMama Issue 462 – Happy Summer

Happy Summer!

Dear Family,

In my spare time over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been reading a book about a most remarkable American, Greg Mortenson, who builds schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Jim Banks gave me the book when he was visiting Los Angeles recently. I wonder now if it was because he’d just finished reading it – or because he wanted me learn of this amazing man also living in Bozeman, MT. The book, Three Cups of Tea is about the level of hospitality, family, wisdom, passion, cooperation and love that can pass between people who care about making a difference – regardless of religious and racial obstacles. Regardless of danger. Regardless of national barriers.

And it’s about sheer, dogged persistence and tunnel vision – in the face of rejection, terror and sometimes even starvation. And about miraculous successes.

Half the time I was reading this book, tears came unbidden to my eyes.

It’s a true story.

About a man who’s bringing love and education and clean water and medical care and even a bridge – to connect people to their world and to empower them to bring help and education to their own communities.

This book is going to be required reading by TaxMama.

And over the next few weeks, you will find updates to pages relating to charitable contributions on the site. We will be donating 50% of TaxMama’s share of all purchases of TaxNerd materials to the Central Asia Institute.

I have never seen a person make a dollar go so far and do so much good. Let’s help win some wars in the Middle East with love, instead of missles.

This week’s Job Advice turns employment negotiations into a three-course banquet. Interesting analogy – and one you can easily undertand.

URGENT CALL! We can really use your jokes – especially clean

humor relating to tax or money issues.

In TaxQuips this week we learn about non-profit organizations, losing your down payment on a brand new condo (heart-breaking), the fact that employee prizes are subject to payroll withholding and just how to go about getting the maximum tax deduction for divorce fees.

IRS News reminds us that the Stimulus Act also included provisions for business, too.

Zazzle – Cafe Press – Queensboro

Since it’s summer, and you’re probably going to be traveling with your family, consider getting matching T-shirts and/or hats.
