Ask Taxmama Issue 424 – A Labor of Tax

Dear Family,

I blinked and suddenly it’s Friday?

What happened to the week? It was just Monday a minute ago!

Well, it was very, very hot around here – generally up into the 3 digits. Where we live is definitely one of the hottest parts of the City of Los Angeles. (You can see it on the TV weather maps.)

In Europe and Mexico and other countries, in weather like this, they have a civilized custom – they take a siesta in the middle of the day when it’s hot. Then come back to work a couple of hours later – and work later into the day. But it’s cooler and people are refreshed. We should institute this policy in Southern California.

Anyway, upcoming is Labor Day weekend. Kind of a last hurrah for beach parties, barbecues and free outdoor concerts and picnics. Go out and indulge and have a lovely time. When it’s all over, you’ll be facing a long time of drudgery and work – at least until Rosh Hashanah on September 12th,…then another long, uninterrupted span of work…until Septemeber 21st…and so it goes. (Have you noticed that everyone is Jewish on these holidays, so they can take the days off? Frankly, I think we should all, always, celebrate all of each others’ holidays, don’t you?)

This week’s TaxQuips is full of fun, even playing around with Barry Bonds’ Ball. Read the summaries below – and visit the site to read them all – at

This week’s Money Funnies was so personal and had me laughing so hard, that even though it’s not exactly about money, I think you’ll enjoy it.

IRS News this week is filled with lots of useful tips about things like Selling your home, remembering to give yourself credit for the Telephone Excise Tax Credit, and a warning to avoid getting snagged by those scam e-mails that try to look as if they are from IRS.

Our Job Advice of the Week is about how to negotiate effectively for increased compensation.

Summaries of all the articles are below, with links to the full articles on the site.

Time to get to work!

Have an untaxing, fun week!

Hugs from your favorite TaxNerd,

Eva Rosenberg, EA
