Today TaxMama hears from Sharon in North Carolina with this challenge. “One of my colleagues and I got into a “heated” discussion last night and I wanted to get your take on this filing status question. On a 1040, can a “boyfriend” claim a “girlfriend” if she lived with him all year and makes less than $3,500 per year?”
Dear Sharon,
What do you win if you’re right? And which side of the argument did you pick?
Well, let me tell you how this works.
The boyfriend can definitely take an exemption for his girlfriend if she lives with him ALL YEAR and he provides more than half her support.
If he pays her medical expenses, he can pick those up for the medical deduction.

If he pays for her education, he may pick up the costs, even the student loan interest, if applicable. In other words, he gets the benefit of all deductions and credits available for any dependent.

What can he not do? He may not use the Head of Household filing status.

He will file as single, with a dependent.
