Business Patio

Today TaxMama hears from Sarah in the TaxQuips Forum, with a good question. “My husband is a personal trainer and uses our back patio exclusively to train clients (we do not use this space for anything else).  Is this deductible and if so, how?  Do we have to include the square footage of our whole property (instead of just indoor space) and then divide by that part to find the percentage?

Dear Sarah,

Sure, you can do that.

Add up the square footage of the whole house PLUS the patio.

Then add up the square footage of the patio and the inside space.  That will be your ratio for business use.

You don’t need to pick up the entire property – just the home and patio.
