Amended Returns

Today TaxMama hears from lots of readers and Tax Pros about filing amended returns. The Pros say “I never attach a copy of the original return. And I’ve never had problems. Is this a regional requirement? And of course, since TaxMama says it’s so, it must be true, right? “

Dear Friends,

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

OK, I’ll tell you why TaxMama recommends that you include a copy of the original tax return when you file a 1040X (or any other X), even in the face of the paperwork reduction act, and notwithstanding any tree-killing.

Generally, when you amend a return, you do it because you want a refund. Right?

Don’t you want that refund as soon as possible?

Well, amended tax returns are generally processed by live people, not computers. Those people need to pull up a copy of the original return on IRS’s computers in order to process your amended return.

How many times have you called IRS, or a bank, or your broker, or a customer department somewhere, only to learn they can’t help you right now, the computers are down?

Give him/her something to work with. Even if the computers are down. Once the computers come back up, they can just verify the previous return numbers to ensure you sent them the right information.

But, everything else will have been done.

That’s just one TaxMama’s opinion. But I think it speeds up the process – even when you don’t have a refund coming.
