Today TaxMama® announces – you WILL get your tax refund during the government shutdown.
Dear Family,
In the very first IRS announcement of the year (IR-2019-01), new IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig
assures us about 3 things.
1) Many of his staff are coming back to work – even with the government
shutdown.
2) Filing Season will start on January 28th. The IRS staff will start processing tax returns on that date. It’s OK to get your returns done sooner. Your tax software providers and tax professionals will hold on to the files and transmit them starting January 28th. Hopefully, not all at one time, to not overload the system.
3) Refunds will be issued. As a clever lawyer, he found the loophole allowing him to get the funds to issue your refunds and to operate his agency.
And in other news – the due date for 2018 tax returns is April 15, 2019 – for most of the country.

In an unprecedented bit of policy, Rettig only extended the filing deadline for Maine and Massachusetts to April 16th and DC to April 17th, due to their respective holidays.
