1099? Who me?

Today TaxMama hears from Don from our TaxBootCamp blog, who is puzzled. “Recently I was asked by a client for my SSN so they could give me a 1099.

I explained that I’m self employed and pay my own quarterly taxes, and since I just provide a service and am not employed by my client there would be no need for them to fill out a 1099. My client called her accountant and he was insistent that I provide my SSN. For the past 18 years I have been self employed as a farrier (I shoe horses) in all that time I have never been asked to give my SSN to fill out a 1099. Is this something new or have I been doing it wrong?”

Yup. Don, You are totally wrong.

It’s specifically BECAUSE you are self-employed AND because you provide a SERVICE that the client must issue you a 1099. That happens to be the very definition of who must receive the form. IRS instituted this program in 1980 (yes, that long ago) to start catching self-employed people who weren’t reporting their earnings. IRS started enforcing it in about 1985, …sporadically.

But, since there are so many non-filers and non-payers, IRS is ramping up enforcement now.

But, my friend, you haven’t been doing anything wrong. It’s clear that you’re filing tax returns and making estimated payments. So, you’re not the target. But, as 7 of 9 used to say – you will comply.
