Ask Taxmama Issue 444 – Seeing Red and Wearing Red

Today is National Wear Red Day.
Red is more than just a fashion statement. It’s all about

support for women’s heart disease awareness. Most attention is
placed on men and their heart problems. Sad to say, women have
achieved equality in this regard, too. Yay, we’ve arrived!

This week has been absorbed with getting articles

completed for MarketWatch’s 2008 Tax Resource to launch.

See my notes at MARKETWATCH below for some of the great
new articles there this week.

We had to take passport pictures recently. And I had THE worst experience at FedEx Kinkos. I asked the guy if he was a good photographer. Turned out, not only was he not a good photographer, he had no sense of humor OR customer service.

The nice man neglected to tell us that the camera had a delay. It didn’t take the picture until about 2 seconds AFTER he had snapped the button. So, a few moments after he was done, I started to move and to speak – and THAT’S when the camera took the picture.

FedEx Kinkos uses a digital camera, so the guy can see the

picture before it’s printed. He could have easily re-taken it. But didn’t. Jerk. The worst thing about the picture? The really
dark circles under my eyes. Grrrrrr.

This morning, I came across a potential solution. Read today’s
Daily Cents – Nancie Clare writes terrific articles.

(Oh yes, the picture? Trashed. I went and got my hair done, put make-up on and went to the local printer’s shop where he also takes old-fashioned Polaroid passport photos – and actually looks through the lens before he shoots. Much better.)

Speaking of sneaking up on people today’s Money Funnies is about exactly that! And contains a political lesson, to boot.

It’s time for a couple of challenges:

Challenge One: Find out if you are worth $100,000 a year or more. Be bold and get a complimentary membership to theLadders. For 30 days you can see if you qualify for the high-paying jobs – without investing a dime in the process.

Challenge Two: Which is the best online tax preparation service – For YOU? Use the links to the tax services at Test them all.

It costs you nothing to try out the entire service and prepare your tax return. They will only charge you if you actually transmit the return to IRS, or if you want to print the return.

And if you’ve got a tax pro you’d rather use. Excellent. Use these tools to help you prepare, and to crystallize the questions you have before your appointment.

TaxQuips this week covers foreclosures, settlements, 1099s no one expected and meals for diabetics. You’ll also find terrific advice and clarification from the Pros!

IRS News has information alerting you about the latest scams. They’re already out there scamming people about the rebates that aren’t even law yet. You’ll learn about free tax preparation services from IRS’s team of VITA volunteers. And you’ll find information about the new articles at We’ve just filled the Tax Resource with a boatload of great information for you.

Oh boats! Cruises. Yes!
