Ask TaxMama Issue 509 – Happy Summer and Dads

Happy Fathers Day weekend

Dear Family,

This was an exciting week, wasn’t it?

A pilot died in flight – the passengers land safely in Newark.

Lakers fans riot in Los Angeles.

IRS announces a crackdown on employee cell-phone deductions – then retracts it.

Iranian protester break past government-imposed Internet roadblocks to Twitter their dissent.

President Obama provides certain job-related benefits for same-sex couples.

President Obama outlines his health care proposal.

Whew! What a week!

What intrigues me about the health care discussion is that everyone is looking at the massive costs for any kind of universal health-care program. Why are they not looking at the massive cost savings in Medi-Cal, welfare programs and emergency room costs, among other areas? America has been picking up the tab for uninsured or indigent patients, practically forever. Wake up lawmakers. We’re ALREADY spending the money. We would spend far less if all those uninsured folks who presently use our medical systems could have access to doctors and preventive care, rather than emergency rooms. In just one city, Austin, Texas, NINE people managed to accumulate 2,678 emergency room visits over a six year period. Imagine the cost savings if they had been able to see a regular physician. Perhaps if the legislature looked at the net costs, some form of universal healthcare would become quite obviously affordable. I’ll bet, in fact, there would be a net savings to taxpayers.

In TaxQuips this week, we learn a little-known secret that benefits divorced couples when selling what used to be their joint home; what happens (or alternatives) when you’re laid off and can’t pay your 401(k) loan; which is better, a foreclosure or short sale – or is there another tax alternative; and just who should and should not be getting 1099s?
