Ask TaxMama Issue 459 – Spring Cleaning

Happy Soldiers Memorial Day

Dear Family,

May is coming to an end.
This was the month with no major filing deadlines.
Supposed to be a good time to do some spring cleaning –
not just the house, but your files, records, storage areas and so forth. Did it work for you?

Not for me. Sheesh, it gets really busy around here in May.
This is when we organize and set up the summer’s EA Exam Review class. You should have seen the walls of boxes filled with books and software and stuff! Thank goodness the Fire Marshall didn’t visit!

The good news is – we packed and shipped everyone’s kits this week; so we can see the floor again. (And the recycling guys are getting lots of nice, clean cut-up cartons.)

The bad news is – we’ve run out of several sets of materials and had to reorder before we could ship again.

So far, despite some annoying technical difficulties, everyone’s delighted with the class and what they’re learning.

My mother asked last night, “Do they get their money’s worth?” What an insightful question!

“Yes, absolutely,” I answered. “I see to it that, even for those students who don’t pass the EA exam the first time -they get enough pratice tips and ideas to put into use immediately so they can earn at least 10-100 times more than they’ve paid for the classes.”

But not everyone wants to be an EA. So the world has other high-paying jobs for you. To get a new job, or a better job, what’s the most important job-hunting tactic?

This week’s Job Advice replies – be persistent. Also, scroll down to read TaxMama’s tale of persistence.

Like that segue? Let me give you something else to smile about.
Today’s Money Funnies explains why God cannot get tenure.

Let’s see what else we have for you today.

TaxQuips this week explains how to deal with two businesses, how to get missing information from the military paymasters, what your options are of leniency from IRS if you misaddressed your tax return on April 15th, and whether an LLC is a good idea.

IRS News today is about a proposal to create a standard business deduction option for office in home.

One of the 10 most frequent questions TaxMama gets is “How long do I have to keep my records? And what do I have to keep?”
Join me on Wednesday June 18th at 1:00 pm PDT for a webinar on that very topic. It’s FREE – and you can ask your questions about your own specific situation.

As always, we love your feedback, opinions and ideas.

Since it’s summer, and you’re probably going to be traveling with your family, consider getting matching T-shirts and/or hats.

But do put everyone’s picture – so even if you don’t know the local language, you can point to a family member and ask if anyone has seen him or her. Or use a graphic or piece of art you all like. You’ll find three options right here in our SPECIAL DEALS section.
