Today TaxMama hears from Lee from AOL, who tells us, “I was told that since I am pregnant in 2005, I would be able to claim that on my taxes and get a break.

Is that true? The baby is not due until 2/28/06.

Sorry Lee.

Pregnancy isn’t deductible. Babies are.

Now, if you manage to give birth on Dec. 31 at 11:59 pm you will have a dependent exemption for the whole year. You could force the issue with a C-section – but then, you’d also have a premie – and that’s not so great for your baby.

Definitely not worth it, just to get a tax exemption.

Of course, if your medical expenses during the year were high enough to itemize, you can take those deductions. But I truly hope they weren’t.

Anyway, remember, you’ll find answers to questions about babies and other tax issues, free.
