Home Improvement

Today TaxMama hears from Dail in Wyoming, who asks, “How much can you deduct from your taxes for home improvement? I have all of my receipts. “

Dear Dail,

Just hang on to those receipts in a permanent file. They probably won’t do you any good right now.

But when you get ready to sell the house, you’ll be able to add all these costs to your purchase price and reduce any profit. This will be worthwhile if you hold the house long enough to appreciate more than 0,000 (or 0K if you’re married).

Also if you ever decide to convert the house to a rental, these invoices will come in handy. They will help give you a larger depreciation deduction.

As for now, unless you’ve made improvements because you or someone in your household is disabled – and the improvements serve to make living there easier AND you have a doctor’s written recommendation…you’ll get no tax benefit.
