Today TaxMama hears from Miky in Corona, NY who asks, “I know this may sound funny, but I want to ask you if you can put you pets down as dependants on your tax return?

Dear Miky,

Tell you what.

If you can get the Social Security Administration to issue Social Security numbers to your pets – sure, take them as dependents.

In other words…no.

In fact, that’s one of the reasons IRS matches dependents’ SSN’s to the Social Security Administration database – some people used to actually add their pets to their tax returns.

When IRS added the lines for SSNs to the tax returns in the 1980s, you’d be amazed at how many millions of dependents dropped off the tax rolls!

Good try, though.
