Ask Taxmama Issue 449 – Happy Womens History Month

Happy

Dear Family,

38 days and 16 hours and 2 minutes to go until April 15th.
(Did you see the countdown widget at www.taxmama.com ?)

Let me start this issue with a note about government
efficiency. Remember I was talking about passport photos

a while back? Well, what follows passport photos?
Passport applications. Right?

I was TOTALLY reluctant to let my present passport out of
my hands and to place it into the US mail. But…finally,
I sent them both off on February 18th. Shock of shocks!

The new passports arrived on February 28th!

And the cancelled passports came back, with the neat little
holes punched through them, on March 5th. This was fast.

Then, I had to renew my drivers license. They gave me the

option of doing it online. The new license also arrived on
March 5th. It took less than a week. Just about long enough
to print it out and drop it into an envelope.

Do you really think our various government agencies are
finally learning to take advantage of the efficiencies

provided by computers?

You don’t believe that, well, take a look at a nice surprise
in today’s IRS News.

IRS News includes something really refreshing – and something terribly burdensome. First IRS created a new form this year to help misclassified employees – those who got 1099s instead of being paid wages. And overlooked the enormous burden imposed on folks who’ve already been victimized by their employers. Now they face paperwork overload, due to this simplified new form. IRS didn’t think this procedure through. We will be pestering the Service to fix the procedure.

On the other hand – KUDOS to IRS for simplifying the application fee process for the Installment Agreement. Now, if you can’t afford the full fee, you won’t have to beg for a reduction. The computer will compute it for you automatically.

Remember, you can play with the Stimulus Calculator tool on

the www.TaxMama.com home page to see how much you’ll get back.

Time to lighten up, I think, with Points to Ponder in 2008,
the topic of this week’s Money Funnies.
https://taxquips.com/index.php?cat=MoneyFunnies

TaxQuips this week includes the best and most succinct summary I’ve ever written about how an LLC owner can get paid, we address the question of deducting travel when you live on the road, we face the harsh realities of renting to family and TaxMama makes a big mistake about a Stimulus question – and corrects it. It’s all in this week’s TaxQuips
https://taxquips.com/index.php?cat=TaxQuips

Today’s MarketWatch article isn’t written yet. (That’s the

next thing I’ll be doing.) It will be a checklist of things
to do for March – and some notes clarifying some myths about
the Stimulus Rebates – since I am clearly such an expert.
(cough, cough)

Lots of people, especially people studying for the EA Exam have been telling they don’t have a solid basis in taxation. Or that, even after passing the exam and learning the laws, they want to know more about how to fill in the tax forms and learn some of the shortcuts and tricks tax professionals traditionally use. So, join us for Solving the Tax Puzzle, Part I.

It will start next week. I am setting it all up for you in

the next few days! Join us. It will be fun!

OK, running late. Spending too much time reading incoming e-mails!

As always, we love your feedback, opinions and ideas.

You are what makes all this fun – and interesting!
