Deadline Extensions for Combatants and Disaster Areas

IRS spokesman Eric Smith reminds us that deadline extensions provided to disaster-area taxpayers and those serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other combat-zone localities also give those affected more time to put money into an IRA.

Filing and payment extensions, granted by the IRS in connection with a presidential disaster declaration, also extend the deadline for contributing to an IRA. This includes areas affected by recent floods, storms and tornadoes.

  • Thus, people have until May 6 in parts of Illinois

  • May 19 in parts of Georgia

  • and Missouri

  • and May 27 in parts of Arkansas

In addition, because members of the military and support personnel generally have a deadline extension until 180 days after they leave the combat zone, they also have an extension of their IRA contribution deadline. See the questions and answers, particularly #26, on extensions of deadline at

Beyond that, under the special HERO Act provision, the time window is still open for members of the military who received tax-free combat pay in 2004 or 2005 and wish to make IRA contributions for those years. The deadline for making these special back-year contributions is May 28, 2009. See Q/A 34 and 35 at
