Ask TaxMama Issue 548 – TGIO

Thank Goodness it's Over! Tax season, I mean

Dear Family,

Wow. What a hectic tax season. We were so exhausted that we didn’t even hold our annual end of tax season party. Lulu opted for leaving early and going somewhere to get pampered. I was going to do the same thing, but the phone kept ringing with clients with last-minute emergencies. And a surprise in my e-mail. An invitation to be on Fox Business News today. So watch for me sometime between 11:00 am – Noon Pacific time.  Watch quickly. It will only be 5-7 minutes.
https://www.foxbusiness.com/index.html

Got a lot to finish before I head out. But first. THANK YOU.

So many of you have been such an important part of making this tax season wonderful. And thank you for making the transition to the new site work smoothly. We did hit some rough patches. But we are finding solutions. And as soon as Andrew gets over his turn at the flu, we’re implementing some more improvements so you have no more problems with the site. Ever.

I especially want to thank the following people who have been answering the most questions in the Tax Quips Forum:
Rita Lewis, EA in Connecticutt – www.DollarsSense.com
David Toelkes, EA in South Carolina – https://taxmama.wpengine.com/forum/profile/David+Toelkes/
Toni McIntyre, CPA, EA in Texas – https://taxmama.wpengine.com/forum/profile/Toni+McIntyre/
Kris Hix, EA in Kentucky https://kristhetaxlady.com/

Feel free to look them up – and hire them. They know things.

I want to thank everyone else who asked questions, answered, provided commentary.
And of course, the two biggest sources of humor –

Floyd Greenman, EA in Chatsworth
Blakely Sanford, EA in San Diego

Great news. Next month, a very special team of writers will be providing you with a wealth of interesting information. Look for a special new resource on the Equifax site. Including a weekly column by TaxMama. The first column, after the introduction, of course, will be a bit controversial. You’re going to get some tips you’re going to find emotionally difficult to implement. I won’t tell you what yet. But you’re going to find it very interesting.

So, how did you survive? Was it busy? Was it fun for you, too? I have to tell you, one of the best parts of tax season is the people. I love to see all my friends and catch up and gossip. Of course, there is always a bit of sadness. One friend lost her uncle last weekend. A bittersweet experience. He’d been living with them forever. Had Alzheimers and could never be left alone. You’re familiar with that burden. But still,…they miss him. That’s rough.  Have you ever noticed how things go in cycles? All of sudden, everyone is dying.

Then there are the good cycles. One year, long ago, I was responsible for 3 divorces and at least as many marriages. That year, it seemed as if we were always going to weddings. Then, no weddings for ages. Of course this past year, in fact these last few months, have been full of weddings. All these beautiful, smart, fun women have finally found suitable men to enhance their lives.

Jennie Phipps was among those nice enough to send people to TaxMama for last minute extension information. Thanks!

In TaxQuips this week we learn how to file prior year tax returns when you are self employed. What to do if your new spouse, who was formerly your domestic partner, was taxed for all those domestic partner health insurance benefits. Does a vocational school that trains helicopter pilots qualifies for the education credits or deductions? Can you deduct the enormous cost of your child’s substance abuse treatments as medical expenses? All this and more at TaxMama’s TaxQuips.
