Ask TaxMama Issue 523 – Exotic Climes

Support Breast Cancer Awareness month

Dear Family,

A wonderful, charming, delightful and otherwise irresistible gentleman just called to pay for his tax return via credit card. Which reminded me about something funny that happened. Lulu and I were all excited about getting a new student from Micronesia. Talk about way out there!

We wanted to call here, but at 7:00 am California time, it was 1:00 am there – the next day! We wanted to make sure the package goes to the right place, and the shipping address info was a bit odd. Although the ‘state’ field on the order form said Micronesia, the ZIP code was in Florida. This student confirmed that, yes, she wanted the materials sent to Florida. OK. After several email exchanges about the class, I got bold and asked about Micronesia. She said it was odd that I ask, since Lulu also asked about it. Why are we asking? She lives in Florida. Why do we keep asking about Micronesia? Hmmm….so I went back to look at the order form. On the checkout page, there’s a drop-down menu to select your state. Right above Florida is ‘Fed. St. Micronesia’!

Too bad. We were hoping to get invited out to the exotic western Pacific. Oh well, we’ll just settle for invitations to intriguing places like Roger’s Portugal hideaway Portugal hideaway,
or Jon and Cindy’s luxurious Honduras beach house.
or Jacqueline & Joseph’s Washington State farm.

And now, a moment of the silence for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Indonesia, Samoa, and elsewhere.

The tax season filing deadline is zooming up upon us. But every time we try to work on my own clients’ tax returns, we get interrupted by yet another call about “where is my First Time Homebuyers Credit refund?” There are people all over IRS investing this issue and we have yet to come up with coherent answers. People are being told that IRS does not have the amended returns we sent it. (We have an individual USPS tracking code on each and every tax return!)The mystery continues…more next week as we finally solve it.

In IRS News this week we get the latest per diem rates for business travelers, effective October 1st of 2009.
