Lighthearted Look at an Infamous Date (excerpts)
Everyone knows the implications of "April 15" - Tax day is here.
When the 16th Amendment was adopted in 1913, allowing Congress to
institute the income tax, the original tax return preparation
deadline date was March 1. Five years later, Congress inexplicably
changed the date to March 15. In 1955, the date was changed again
to April 15, presumably "to spread the workload," according to
IRS spokespersons. We are sure that the fact that most people got
refunds didn't influence the government's decision to hold on to
taxpayer's money for another month ...
So, for the last 47 years, April 15 has been associated with the
"dreaded day," the day individual income taxes are due in the U.S.
We thought it might be fun to take a look back at history and see
what other events have been associated with April 15:
- April 15, 1452: Leonardo da Vinci is born
- April 15, 1850: The City of San Francisco is incorporated
- April 15, 1865: President Lincoln dies, several hours after he is shot at Ford's Theater in Washington
- April 15, 1892: The General Electric Co. is incorporated in New York
- April 15, 1912: The British luxury liner Titanic sinks less than three hours after hitting an iceberg
- April 15, 1923: Insulin becomes available for general use
- April 15, 1924: Rand McNally publishes the first comprehensive Road Atlas
- April 15, 1934: Dagwood and Blondie Bumstead welcome a baby boy, Alexander, to the comic strip, Blondie
- April 15, 1947: Jackie Robinson, baseball's first black major league player, makes his official debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on opening day
- April 15, 1992: Hotel magnate Leona Helmsley begins serving a prison sentence for tax evasion (we especially like the choice of the sentencing date!)
