IRS, preparers sign off on free electronic tax filing

WASHINGTON (AP) - Up to 78 million taxpayers will probably be able to file their tax returns electronically without charge under an agreement between the Internal Revenue Service and a group of tax preparers and software publishers.

"This represents an important step forward for taxpayers and our e-filing efforts," said IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti, who signed the agreement Wednesday with Free File Alliance manager Mike Cavanagh.

O'Neill prepares tax overhaul plan
CODE CHANGES TO BE SOUGHT AFTER ELECTION


WASHINGTON - Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, once pegged as the Cabinet member most likely to depart after the Nov. 5 elections, is making plans for a post-election administration effort to overhaul the nation's tax system.

More than 100 Treasury Department experts are compiling a list of possible changes to the 9,500-page U.S. tax code, from simplifying regulations on savings bond sales to scrapping income taxes in favor of consumption or value-added taxes.
