Dear Family,

Labor Day weekend .... when everyone starts looking at getting ready for school, putting the summer toys away, and showing up at work more often.

Remember, as a kid, when summer stretched luxuriously and endlessly ahead of you ... and Labor Day intruded into your reality. It was always a little bittersweet, wasn't it?

Summer was good, even with the chores and responsibilities. And you hated to see all that freedom end. But, you were excited about the new semester, a little anxious about the new teachers or students you would meet, but eager to learn all the new things the school year would bring.

Now, as parents, you've worked while your children were off on their own, doing ... [oh my goodness. WHAT?!]. You worried about them. Why? Mostly, I think, because you remember the kinds of mischief you got into - that your parents never knew about. But, you survived. So have your children.

And you remember how important it is, when growing up, to make your own mistakes - and resolve them on your own, without any parental interference. It builds character. (Don't you hate hearing that?) But it does. If you oversee and supervise your children too much, they'll never develop any independence skills. They'll never learn to make decisions - or solve problems ... or write better tax laws.

Yeah, that's what we need - a better, more sensible, simpler tax code. But, hey, I'm not about to bring that up. I remember the last time they "simplified" it. Yeah, let's not go there for a while. Speaking of which ...

The Republican Convention has been very entertaining. Arnold is emerging as quite a charismatic leader. Pity that under the present Constitution, he cannot run for President. Are you a gambler? How much do you want to bet that Arnold starts an initiative to amend the Constitution to allow immigrants to become president?

Oh, no doubt, the amendment will be circumscribed with all kinds of qualifications and minimum residency and/or education requirements. But, in our lifetime, Arnold will effect this change. And well, that means, even I could someday grow up to President of the United States. (Though I am less sure about the growing up part.}

Speaking of taxes ... and fees ... have you seen how the airlines are starting to charge a fee for getting ticketed through their phone lines or at the airport counter? Now, the only way to get your ticket without a fee is by booking it yourself - online. So, if you MUST talk to your airline's ticket agent, be sure to be at your computer and ready to book your own ticket - just call them and ask them all your questions to your heart's content - just don't let the nice airline ticket-lady actually book the flight(s). Do you think that's what they had in mind?

Isn't that so cool? Now, that they've gotten away with having you buy your own sack/box lunch as you board, if you want a meal, now, they're charging you to buy a ticket, too. Where'd they ever get that idea? From TicketMaster, do ya think?

Just wait - soon, if you want the cabin attendant to get you a pillow, or bring you water, there will be fees. Soon, those hard-working ladies and gentlemen of the air will be wearing those coin changers, just like carney vendors used to wear. Well, friends, keep your quarters and dollars handy wherever you go!

Hugs to all.
