Dear Family,

What an intense week!

One of those weeks, where I barely slept 2-3 hours per night, trying to get everything done - my job - and filling in for an instructor who bugged out at the last minute because of Hurricane Charley. Of course, so much is still left undone.

My eyes are so blurry right now, please forgive me for any typos you find in today's issue.

In the news this week, did you see that Oprah was on a jury that declared a man guilty of murder?

Being interviewed after the trial, Oprah told the reporters, "This is not about Oprah Winfrey, the fact is a man has been murdered."

I must say, that had to take an enormous amount of courage on Oprah's part to be on a jury like that. It's hard enough for a private citizen to have to vote guilty in a murder trial - where you're relatively anonymous, as a juror. But to have to do it in the full view of the public. That simply gives me chills.

However, my first thought when I learned that she'd been on this jury was - why would the defense attorney allow her to be on his client's jury? For the benefit of being close to a star? Perhaps. Because Oprah is noted for her reasonableness? Maybe. Or because he can ask for an appeal on the basis that his client didn't get a fair trial because of all the attention focused on a particular juror ... or something that involves pointing the finger at Oprah's presence?

This is all particularly close to home right now, since I am staring a Jury Summons for the end of this month.

Oh well, summer's winding down. The school across the street is nearly done setting up another temporary building to accommodate more students. It will block my view (and probably the sound) of the children at play in the yard. Pity. It's rather comforting to hear happiness.

Hugs to all.
