Martha certainly made a big splash with her post-sentencing statements. Do you know what chutzpah is? Chutzpah is when a son kills his parents and throws himself on the mercy of the court because he's an orphan. To paraphrase Martha - Oh my! They blew it all out of proportion and were so mean to me! How could they? Just because I was so rude and high-handed to the investigators is no reason they should retaliate and make a public spectacle of me. Woe is me! My husband points out that, in that respect, Martha is right. The investigators and prosecutors, by taking revenge on her for her rudeness to them, also harmed the shareholders and employees of the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. And that, my friends, they should not have done. Enron's Ken Lay was also in the international news. Well, let's root for little or no jail time - and lots of fines and penalties. I'd really like to see him have to give up all his assets to the stockholders and pension funds whose assets became worthless because of his, and his staff's cavalier behavior. The reason I don't want that 175 years of jail time is because I really don't want to have to pay to support him for the rest of his life. It would be a far worse punishment to put him in a tenement and have to start over with nothing. (With restrictions on him ever being on the board of a publicly traded company again - no government contracts - ever. ) Speaking of government. Wasn't it outrageous of the Bush - Cheney04 campaign to send out those instructions to their campaign workers to get the churches involved? Well, our buddy, Jim Woods, a retired aerospace engineer in Manitou Springs, CO brought me the question about whether or not that campaign tactic could cost the churches their tax exempt status. I was so intrigued with his question - and really, really hoped it would turn out to be illegal, tax-wise. (Nu, so I'm biased. I think non-profits should have to follow the rules in order to remain tax-free.) To learn the answer to Jim's question .... read the article. Anyway, that's how I spent half the day - refining that article and keeping it objective. The rest of it, well, we're getting ready for the EA Exam Review class that starts tomorrow morning. It's going to be a very interesting experience. Have a wonderful weekend - and remember, while it's National Hot Dog month, you're meant to eat one - don't behave like one. Hugs to all.
