Dear Family,

Can you believe George Lucas is SIXTY years old?

Remember that bright young kid who wrote and directed THX 1138 back in the early '70s? That eerie future documentary with Robert Duvall? Perhaps not.

But I'll be you remember American Graffiti with Ron Howard and a young Richard Dreyfuss. And did you notice Harrison Ford there?

Do you think that led to his role in Star Wars, shortly afterwards?

The 1977 release of Star Wars was one of those cultural phenomenon, like the moment the radio announced that JFK was shot, you still remember where you were and what you were doing.

I had graduated from college, moved out of my apartment, and given away most of my things. Having spent the summer in Israel and Europe, I returned in time for the debut of this highly anticipated film. People stood in line for hours, even days to get tickets. It was one of the first films that offered advance ticket sales.

I'd gone back to Orange County (Calif.) to visit an old friend, only to learn he was getting married. (It's OK, I had turned him down.) His roommate was around and invited me to see Star Wars with him. What the heck, sure. Standing in line for over an hour, we snagged tickets for a show that evening. And had the day to fill. Marty and I zipped down to Newport Beach and spent the afternoon chasing along the beach and tossing each other into the water. It was such a wonderful, silly, care-free day.

Being soaked, I could do with a change of clothes before the movie. So I borrowed some of his buddy's clothes and off we went. Naturally, the theater was packed. The excitement was high. And we weren't disappointed. The first time we saw the Wookie, and all the amazing, realistic, special effects. Even intellectual snobs like us loved the film.

Oh, sure, we all recognized that it was the standard fairy-tale fare set in space, fair maiden in distress, her knight in dented armour comes to rescue her and she pulls a Taming of the Shrew number, yet fights by his side. Yeah, yeah. But it was a good story and a visually stunnng film.

Today, in the midst of all the special effects, even in TV shows, you take it for granted. Back in 1977, when Lucas was in his early 30's - this film stood out. He's had a most prolific film career, since then. He's created films that stand the test of time, culture and even have cult (Howard the Duck <g>) followings.

I know, none of that has anything to do with taxes. But May is one of the few months when we have no tax deadlines looming. So, you get to take a break and goof off.

Me? I'm still busily scribbling away. It takes longer when you have to look up each statement you make to make sure it's still correct - and find the authority to back you up.

You're going to want to read today's IRS News. It's about easier documentation rules for meals and entertainment.

In the news in the coming week is the issue of same-sex marriages that are about to become legal in Massachusetts. (See Boston Herald on Monday) Innovative ways businesses use technology (USA Today, this weekend, I think).

Oh yes, let me put your mind at rest in case you've been hearing about all that gambling on college campuses. Don't worry about your kids. They're not being corrupted, despite what that NCAA report on gambling seems to say. The journalists didn't READ the report - just the summarized statistics. There's a good explantion by Tom Alexander in the Chicago Sports Review. The big betting is on their own golf scores, or football pools. You know, like you do.

Hey, have a wonderful weekend - and go outside.

Hugs to all!
