Dear Family,

The folks at ABC-TV were kind enough to have consumer reporter, Ric Romero come out here this week with his assistant and cameraman. They were working on a segment about bad experiences with mortgage companies. Yes, I have a good bad story.

Just before they came, I decided to check Wells Fargo's latest loan rates online and called them up to see if they'd reduce my mortgage. Well, even with the on-hold time, and screening process, I got this nice young man, named Chris to cut my mortgage to 4.375% (ok, it's over 10 years) without charging me a dime or asking for lots of paperwork. Took about 15 minutes and was a nice addition to the mortgage interview - juxtaposition of the good and bad lenders?

And, in 15 minutes, I saved us over over $11,000. Let's see, that works out to $44,000 per hour. If only!

Remember that article I wrote for CBS.MarketWatch about stock theft losses on Valentine's Day?

Well, IRS really wasn't happy about it. Yesterday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued an announcement about IRS Notice 2004-27. It practically has my name on it. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. (I'll be putting up a copy of it linked to Issue #246 over the weekend.)

IRS will be assessing penalties if you amend returns based on my advice. So don't. Not if you have losses from publicly traded stocks. If you have losses from private companies, those losses may still qualify for the theft loss rules.

HOT NEWS! We've just added a job site for tax and financial professionals through the kind service of CareerBank.

This issue will be a bit shorter, because it's such a busy time. But there are excellent resources.

Now, I've got to go ... still have so much to do.
