» From Wheeling, IL » Hi TaxMama, With all this talk about the marriage penalty by the Bush administration, what will happen to it? If the Bush Administration removes the marriage penalty before April 15, 2001 can we get the benefit this year? I mean for the tax forms I will file for 2000. I will be one of the beneficiaries of this law Thanks Madhu ![]() Polishing up my crystal ball .... Peering in ... Oh well ... it says, "Don't hold your breath." Tax law revisions like that are never retroactive. And the 'marriage penalty' is not ONE item. It is a series of dozens of code sections and computations. See TaxMama's Article, “Why Congress Wants You To Live In Sin”. Who knows which ones will be affected by a new law that has yet to be written. So far, the proposals we've seen have only addressed one or two of the issues. Don't hold your breath ...or hold off filing. Get your refund now. And on the off-chance that the laws are retroactive, you can always amend and get even more money back. Yeah ... right! Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg |
