And while this is going on, Congress doesn't have a budget... Why does all of this make me so angry? This is their JOB! This is what we hire and pay our mayors, governors, Congressfolk and presidents to administer. In fact, we even pay for their staff who does all the work for them. They know that a budget needs to be completed by a certain date each year - or government employees, contractors, social security recipients, pensioners, medical bills,...don't get paid. People suffer. They know exactly WHEN the union contracts are up. (And why, for heaven's sake are they all up at the same time?) There is no reason not to have come to an agreement months before the contract ended. That's what planning and staff are for. Oh yes, there is ... the good folks at Los Angeles Unified School District have stood up the drivers' union three times. LAUSD has canceled the last three scheduled meetings at the last moment with no warning. Think the drivers are furious? Oh yes! You hear things in the news about how well these employees are paid - top money in the country, etc. The facts are, most of them do not earn the $50,000 salaries quoted in the city's ads. Most of them work split shifts and part-time. ALL employees in Los Angeles took significant, temporary, pay CUTS in the last set of negotiations, when the budget was tight. They were promised to get that back. Most of it has not been paid back. I have seen people whose income decreased by 20% or more during that time. I'll bet you know or live with someone who is affected! |
