I work for my brother. It is a legitimate remodeling business, and I am on the payroll, with no taxes removed from my check. I will receive a 1099. What do I do about taxes-what percentage is it?

I save my receipts for gas, etc. ( Job related) This will be a lot of money to pay in April. I will start putting aside money this year, but what about now? If it is too much to pay, does the IRS have a payment plan?

Karen

Dear Karen,

You can't BOTH be on the payroll AND receive a 1099. It's one or the other.

Frankly, from your brief description, it appears that you SHOULD be on payroll. And not doing that will cause your brother some potential problems...and you to pay extra taxes.

If in fact, you really are an independent contractor, in business for yourself, and you are entitled to deduct all reasonable expenses on your Schedule C.

Such expenses include: auto, office supplies, telephone, education, all kinds of costs.

You'll find more information in TaxMama's article here.

Best wishes,
Eva Rosenberg
