License to Ad

From: Thousand Oaks, CA

Dear TaxMama,

I am starting my own website business. I don’t sell Items just ad space on my web site.

My question is – Do I need a business license to operate this business and to claim dectuctions for the expenses on my tax return.

Mary Ann

Dear MaryAnn,

You’ll need to check with your city, the City of Thousand Oaks.

You’re a business. So, if businesses are required to be licensed in 1000 Oaks, so do you.

And since you’re working from home, you’ll also need to see if there are any special provisions for people whose business is at home.

Best wishes,
Eva Rosenberg, MBA, EA
