07.15.2005 Partnership Returns or Extensions Due 08.02.2005
08.16.2005 Personal Returns or Extensions are due Dear Family, Another Father's Day weekend coming up. And me, without a father. Sigh. Seems I have been fortunate enough to have several mothers over the years. But only one father. And I adored him blindly. Little girls are like that, you know. But, you don't want to sit here and read about Daddys. So, let's move that discussion elsewhere. Interesting and odd things are happening out in the tax world. You already know that IRS is chasing after tax shelters. But do you really understand the stakes IRS is going after? They aren't really interested in you and me. IRS is after billions of dollars, manipulated by the very highest levels of complex tax plans. As of this moment, there are 226 articles on Google News covering KPMG's admitted "wrong-doing" involving major tax shelters. Doncha love the mea culpa - mea ex-parner culpa? Gee, we admit KPMG did bad things. BIG bad things. But, alas, no, 'twasn't us. We're going to shift blame to our former partners - and let them deplete their assets fighting all the potential civil suits. For a moment there, a brief shining moment, I actually was proud of KPMG for standing tall and accepting responsiblity for their planning strategies. Regardless, indictment or not, IRS stands to collect millions, perhaps billions, from them or their insurers. Do you think that will all that influx of money our taxes will go down? I don't know if you heard us on the air last night. Harrell Carter from WNWS in Jackson, TN invited me on his show to talk about small businesses and taxes. And that was just fine. We had a lovely chat on the air. But afterwards...he called back. For nearly an hour, we had a private chat about the direction of the economy, about the apathy of good people who either just won't look at, or pretend not to see, about how much the rest of the world is starting to hate us. He's concerned. And he has a talk show. I'm glad people like him are in the community. I am convinced that each good person, doing one good act at a time, will influence others to do just one good act...at a time...and we can make improve conditions in our own biome - which may have extended into part of Cyberspace. Let's just do our best to be good examples and good role models. Sometimes, we'll mess up in the process. And when we do, the trick is - not to give up. Just start again from the new position. A lot like football. You've gained a few yards, you get to keep them. Oh well, these are unquestionably interesting times. And you are unquestionably and interesting person.
Best wishes, President Bush and Social Security
