Weird Credit
line

From: Los Angeles

Dear TaxMama,

My friend who thought he was having banking and credit problems due to a tax lien, actually has a different problem.

He went online to Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. None of the agencies appear to be able to locate any record of his existence - they couldn't locate any files for him.

The exception to this was Equifax, who at first said, "Yes, we have your record. We're going to verify your ID." They asked him questions about his mortgage (there is NO mortgage). His denial of having a mortgage short-circuited the process.

A couple of years ago, he tried to open a bank account at Wells Fargo. They ran a credit check, and flat out refused to open an account in his name...referred him to the credit bureaus, refused to furnish a rationale. He assumed it was the old tax lien.

The lien is *23 years old*.

The IRS, the CA Franchise Tax Board, and the SSA know of his existence. He does pay taxes, etc.

So...he's trying to straighten things out. But he does not know where to begin at this point.

What should he do next? Is there someone who would take money to solve this problem?

Any advice, wise woman that you are?

Janice

Dear Janice,

Have your buddy call these guys. They are a non-profit organization that has been around for a long time and is known to be reputable. CONSUMER CREDIT COUNSELORS OF LOS ANGELES

Maybe they can help. Their service is essentially free. Though they do ask for a donation.

Also, try to get a secured credit card and see what happens.

Bankrate has a list of reputable companies that offer them.

Don't just go out in general - there ARE scam artists out there who will keep your deposits.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,
