» From: Scotch Plains, NJ Dear TaxMama: If I have both a Social Security number and an Employer Identification Number associated with my LLC, which number do I use? I assume I use the number that is asked of me. But what if I'm asked for my tax ID number? Which one do I use? Bill ![]() Hi Bill, You do NOT have BOTH associated with your LLC. Your LLC is a separate entity from you. IT has an employer identification number (EIN). Use it. YOU have a Social Security number (SSN). The fact that you may be filing your LLC's tax return as part of your 1040, using Schedule C, does not mean your LLC suddenly grew an SSN. It still operates under the EIN it was born with when you set it up. So, anytime someone asks for your LLC's tax ID number, use the EIN. Otherwise, you'll lose the liability protection you set it up for in the first place. Enough alphabet soup for you? Now, go forth and succeed! Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
