The other day, we talked about churches getting political. Linda Dorfmont, EA of Southern California has some comments about that. <TaxPro Comments> Regarding political activity by non-profits, I have done considerable research for my engineering society (Institute of Industrial Engineers). Many years ago our professional registration in California was threatened by legislation. Many IEs in California and others outside who got their registration under IE or Manufacturing Engineering designation stood to lose their ability to offer services to the public as well as promotional opportunities on the job. After my research into 501 (a) and 501 (c) (3), I found that while a non-profit could not support a particular candidate or party, it could urge its members to get involved in legislation that directly affected them. We could use up to 25% of our print space in our newsletters and other publications for advertising, and spend 3% of our revenue on political issues such as the legislation proposed, all without endangering our exempt status. These percentages may have been changed in the ensuing 15 years so they should be checked out again. Churches urging their parishioners to vote for particular candidates is against the IRC and does endanger their tax exempt status. Linda Dorfmont E.A. |
